Finding an attorney that can help you might seem a bit overwhelming. Here is a short post on how to begin the process. The first thing you need to consider is how attorneys typically advertise their services. Some use television ads, some use billboards, and some use radio. Almost all attorneys will have a website and advertise in some form on the internet.
Besides advertising you might also search for an attorney using the internet. You can simply google “criminal law attorney in (city)” This will give you some results that generally show the top 2-3 results that say “AD” in front of them. That means the lawyers are paying to be in the top 2-3 results. Then google will show you a map with some results and then after the map you should see some links to different lawyers in your area.
Besides using google, there are other platforms that attorney’s advertise and use. For example, you can look on AVVO, Martindale Hubbard, and even on social media using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Yelp. Some of these platforms allow you to read reviews of the attorneys you might be interested in as you are searching. Reviews are helpful but be careful of only relying on reviews on the internet about an attorney. Another resource is the County Bar Associations. Attorney’s often are members of different bar associations and those associations will have a listing service or referral service that you can call.
One of the best ways to find an attorney is simply to ask friends or family members. Typically, friends or family member or co-workers have had the opportunity to work with an attorney and they will usually be able to tell you if they could recommend that person or not depending on the experience.
As you are looking for an attorney, you need to have some sense of what kind of attorney do you need? Criminal Law, Family Law, Business Law, Estate Planning, Employment Law, Workers Compensation, Immigration Law, etc. The list is exhaustive. But what you are looking for is an attorney that can help you with your legal problem.
If you don’t know what kind of attorney that you need, then plan on making a few calls and taking advantage of free consultations that attorney’s provide and within just a few minutes, most attorneys can tell you very quickly what kind of attorney you will need to tackle your legal issue. Most attorney’s (myself included) will provide you with that free consultation and then we will have a list of other attorney’s that practice in different areas where we would be happy to provide you with a referral where we can connect you with that attorney.
Once you have a couple referrals, you then have to decide what is important to you. Are you looking for a lawyer that is from a big firm or small firm? There are pros and cons to attorney’s from different sized firms. Are you looking for an attorney that specializes in your legal issue? Most attorney’s will specialize in 1 or 2 different legal practice areas.
You might also look into how responsive the attorney is and how important that will be in your case. If the attorney you are considering has a reputation for not communicating often with their clients, and that is important to you, then you might want to keep searching. Some attorney’s take on so many clients that you may feel like your case is just a number to them and that each time you call to talk to your lawyer, you feel like you are explaining your case over and over to them. That is generally not a good sign.
One of the biggest considerations you should be looking for is an attorney that is going to care about your legal issue as much as you do. This will be someone who is available, communicates with you often, that knows your case inside and out and is available to meet all of your court appearances.
The last thing you should do before you hire an attorney is to check the California Bar website to make sure your attorney doesn’t have any complaints or suspensions with the bar. People make mistakes but if your attorney has a negative history of behavior with the Bar, you should think very carefully about hiring them for your case.
